Of course, the most memorable aspect of the 1973 sci-fi film, Soylent Green, is that the eponymous “tasteless crud” is , well, errr….ehem…made out of people and not plankton (as claimed). Yum! But I noticed while recently re-watching the film that the conditions of the Earth at that time (the year, we are told, is 2022) are blamed on the Greenhouse Effect (“and everything is warming up” as stated by the characters in the film). It had me wondering. What is the earliest mention of Greenhouse Effect/Global Warming in science fiction? I haven’t yet figure it out (unless SG *is* the earliest mention). If you know the answer, please let me know, and I’ll post some results when I have it figured out.

p.s. If you look closely in this film you’ll see sci fi regulars Leonard Stone and Whit Bissell.
